- Middlesex County
- Middlesex County is a county located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was created in 1785 from portions of Hartford and New London counties. As of 2010, the population was 165,676. As is the case with all eight of Connecticut's counties, there is now no county government, and no county seat. In Connecticut, towns are responsible for all local government activities, including fire and rescue, snow removal, and schools. In a few cases, neighboring towns will share certain resources, e.g. water, gas, etc. However, Middlesex County is merely a group of towns on a map, and no longer has any particular authority. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 155,071 people, 61,341 households, and 40,607 families residing in the county. The population density was 420 people per square mile (162/km²). There were 67,285 housing units at an average density of 182 per square mile (70/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.28% White, 4.42% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 3.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.4% were of Italian, 14.3% Irish, 11.1% English, 8.9% Polish and 8.2% German ancestry according to Census 2000. 91.1% spoke English, 2.6% Spanish, 1.9% Italian, 1.2% French and 1.0% Polish as their first language. There were 61,341 households out of which 30.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% were married couples living together, 8.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% were non-families. 27.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98. In the county the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.10 males. The median income for a household in the county was $59,175, and the median income for a family was $71,319. Males had a median income of $48,341 versus $35,607 for females. The per capita income for the county was $28,251. About 2.30% of families and 4.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.00% of those under age 18 and 5.90% of those age 65 or over.
- Litchfield County
- Litchfield County is a county located in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Connecticut. Litchfield County also has the least population density among Connecticut's counties but, it's the largest county in Connecticut geographically. As of 2010 the population was 189,927. It is part of the New York-Newark-Bridgeport Combined Statistical Area. As is the case with all eight counties in Connecticut, there is no county government; there is no county seat: in Connecticut, each town is responsible for all local services such as schools, snow removal, sewers, fire department and police departments. However, in some cases in rural areas, adjoining towns may agree to jointly provide services or even establish a joint school system. As of the census of 2000, there were 182,193 people, 71,551 households, and 49,584 families residing in the county. The population density was 198 people per square mile (76/km²). There were 79,267 housing units at an average density of 86 per square mile (33/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.77% White, 1.10% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.8% were of Italian, 14.8% Irish, 10.6% English, 9.2% German and 6.3% French ancestry according to Census 2000. 92.3% spoke English, 2.1% Spanish, 1.6% Italian and 1.2% French as their first language. There were 71,551 households out of which 32.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% were married couples living together, 8.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% were non-families. 25.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03. In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 25.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.50 males. The median income for a household in the county was $56,273, and the median income for a family was $66,445 (these figures had risen to $67,591 and $81,752 respectively as of a 2007 estimate)[5]. Males had a median income of $45,586 versus $31,870 for females. The per capita income for the county was $28,408. About 2.70% of families and 4.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.30% of those under age 18 and 5.40% of those age 65 or over.
- Tolland County
- Tolland County is a county located in the northeastern part of Connecticut. As of 2010, the population was 152,691. Counties in Connecticut have no governmental function: all legal power is vested in the state, city, and town governments. Tolland County has the same boundaries as the Tolland Judicial District. Tolland County is incorporated into thirteen towns and was originally formed in 1785 from towns in Windham County, Connecticut . According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 417.01 square miles (1,080.1 km2), of which 410.07 square miles (1,062.1 km2) (or 98.34%) is land and 6.94 square miles (18.0 km2) (or 1.66%) is water. As of the year 2000, there were 136,364 people, 49,431 households, and 34,156 families residing in the county. The population density was 332/sq mi (128/km²). There were 51,570 housing units at an average density of 126/sq mi (49/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.34% White, 2.72% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 2.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 14.9% were of Irish, 14.1% Italian, 9.9% English, 8.8% French, 8.2% German, 8.0% Polish and 5.7% French Canadian ancestry according to Census 2000. 90.5% spoke English, 2.9% Spanish and 1.6% French as their first language. There were 49,431 households out of which 33.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% were married couples living together, 8.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% were non-families. 23.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.03. In the county the population was spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 12.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.50 males. The median income for a household in the county was $59,044, and the median income for a family was $70,856. Males had a median income of $46,619 versus $34,255 for females. The per capita income for the county was $25,474. 5.60% of the population and 2.90% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.60% are under the age of 18 and 5.20% are 65 or older.
- Windham County
- Windham County is a county located in the northeastern corner of the U.S. state of Connecticut. As of 2010, the population was 118,428. The entire county is within the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor, as designated by the National Park Service. As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 109,091 people, 41,142 households, and 28,223 families residing in the county. The population density was 213 people per square mile (82/km²). There were 43,959 housing units at an average density of 86 per square mile (33/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.27% White, 1.87% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. 7.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 17.5% were of French, 12.1% French Canadian, 10.5% Irish, 9.6% English, 8.0% Italian and 6.8% Polish ancestry according to Census 2000. 88.7% spoke English, 5.9% Spanish and 2.7% French as their first language. There were 41,142 households out of which 33.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% were married couples living together, 11.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% were non-families. 24.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.04. In the county the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males. The median income for a household in the county was $45,115, and the median income for a family was $52,490. Males had a median income of $38,319 versus $26,745 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,443. About 5.70% of families and 8.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.30% of those under age 18 and 7.10% of those age 65 or over.
